So the movie guys all drew straws and I was chosen to watch this lovely little musical number. No, I’m just kidding I volunteered because I secretly enjoy musicals. Hairspray is a movie filled with great actors and actresses who put on a rather dazzling performance. I’m not going to name all the actors in it because they’re too many to name and I’m lazy, but I will say Christopher Walken is in it and I love him in just about anything he plays in. This musical wasn’t in my genre of musical but was entertaining at parts. I must say it was almost disturbing to watch John Tavolta as a woman. Him dancing and singing as a woman was a mental picture that is seared into my memories forever, never again Travolta! Never a woman again! There is one line I especially loved in this movie and one of the producers for the “Corney Collins Show” says it about the main character, Tracy. He Says, “get that fat communist girl off the stage.” Now that is one funny line in a movie…..well when it was said it was hilarious, ok you’ll have to be there for it.
I must commend this movie for showing the difficulty of the black culture being integrated into the media. This musical took a stand on several issues like that and make it entertaining for the viewer to watch with a nice wide range of entertaining music to go along with it. Overall I think this movie was fun and inviting to a certain crowd of people but a crowd mostly and obviously involving young girls, woman, and not to stereotype but probably the gay community.
