9 is a film that has been getting a lot of attention lately. I was initially turned on to this film by our friends over at MoviesForNobodies. Their discussion got my attention, so I decided to take a look. The trailer, that most of you probably watched before reading this, was beautiful. The animation is great. Normally, I am hesitant to see animated films. I have two small children, however, that often force me to see them. But this is one I am actually looking forward to. Of course, I may need to see this first without them to determine if it is even appropriate for their age group. But right now, I don’t really mind. Check out this plot synopsis, courtesy of IMDb.
9 takes place in a world parallel to our own, in which the very legacy of humanity is threatened. A group of sapient rag dolls, living a post-apocalyptic existence find one of their own, 9 , who displays leadership qualities that may help them to survive. The conflicted, but resilient group includes 1 , a domineering war veteran; 2, an aged inventor; 5 , a stalwart mechanic; 6, a visionary and artist; and 7, a brave warrior. There are at least several malevolent creatures up against this group; namely, the cat-skulled creature from the short film, a split-headed flying being that resembles both a bat and a manta ray in wing shape, and an insectoid creature with jointed legs and a pod-like body.
The film stars Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Martin Landau, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer and Crispin Glover. Personally, the cast of this is not a big draw, but the visuals are. I maintain that The Spirit was enjoyable because of it’s beautiful visuals. I may be the only one. What do you guys think? Is there a reason to see this, or is it destined for the bargain bin?
