Anyone remember Mickey Rourke? He was real big for a while, then he faded away. You may remember him from “Sin City.” Well, based on what I’ve seen so far, Rourke is back baby! He stars in “The Wrestler” as Randy “The Ram” Robinson. This is a film about a wrestler who was really big, but now past his prime (Sound familiar?) He barely ekes out a living performing for his fans, with a burning desire to get back into the ring for one last go round with his arch-rival. But he has a heart attack that forces him to retire.
I used to watch wrestling as a child. I stoped in high school, but I’ve always held a special place in my heart for the “sport” that was such a large part of my childhood. I had action figures, posters, even a Hulk Hogan alarm clock. I will never forget waking up to the Hulkster yelling at me. It went something like this: “Time to wake up, Hulkamaniacs. Up and atom dudes! It’s the dawn of a new day, and another chance to take your vitamins, eat your vegetables, and say your prayers. Time to start a new day little Hulkamaniacs, and with your help, Hulkamania will rise and shine forever!” Not exact, but something I will always at least partially remember. Always thought it was funny. So I will see this movie. Watch the trailer yet? Well, what do you think?
“The Wrestler” is coming to theaters January 16th, 2009
