A little while ago, I wrote a post recaping what we currently know about the upcoming smash hit Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. In it, I covered the fact that Michael Bay intentionally leaked false information about his film to keep the true story under wraps. And by all indications, he has done a fine job. When images leaked onto the web of a cybertronian tank that appeared to be a new form for the fallen decepticon leader Megatron, Michael Bay completely convinced us that Megatron would not be appearing in his upcoming sequel. In fact, when asked directly, Bay told Empire Magazine: “He’s not in this movie. That’s not misinformation.” But recent news may just prove that Michael Bay is, in fact, a damn liar.
A fan post on a Transformers fan site asked a very simple question: Give us some new information! Because we honestly know very little about the film. Well, apparently Revenge of the Fallen screenwriter Roberto Orci writes: Megatron returns! SHOCKER!!! I’m not sure if this is legit or not, so I will tell you to consider all this just a rumor at this point, but it would seem to fit. In fact, the only piece of information we have that would lead us to believe that the iconic villain would NOT BE in this film is Michael Bay saying Megatron would not be in it. And he did say that he would intentionally give us mis-information, right? We saw the picture of the toy, and it was clearly real. Well, we also have the pics that I have included in this post, including the one to the right of this text. So if you really think about it, the evidence actually seems to imply Megatron will be appearing in the film. Look closely at the included pictures. They would seem to fit with the previous images of the tank.
I honestly am not sure what to think at this point, but I really would like to see Megatron appear in the film. He is just too popular of a villain to not at least appear in the film. People know Megatron, far more than they know The Fallen or Devastator. So it would seem to make sense to include him. On the negative side, including Megatron in a film that already features The Fallen and Devastator could cause a bit of the dreaded “3 Villain effect.” 3 big time villains appearing in one film could convolute the story and really cause confusion. Character development could be hindered and the stories for each villain could seem rushed and/or forced. So as much as I would love to see Megatron, I’m not sure if it would be the best thing for the film. Maybe Megatron will only make a brief appearance, sequeing into Megatron returning to conquer Earth and Cybertron for the third film, ending the current story-arc. That would be cool. Or maybe, just maybe, The Fallen is an implied villain, one that is discussed yet only briefly shown. Maybe The Fallen appears at the end of this film to destroy Megatron and set up The Fallen being the villain for the third film? Stay with me here: Revenge of the Fallen sets up the character to return to life in the middle to end of the film, getting it’s revenge in the end by destroying the Decepticons to claim the Earth for itself, setting up a showdown with the autobots in the third. The autobots could be trashed in the second one, limping away to live to fight another day, and in their absence, The Fallen conquers the globe and begins preperations for a conquest of Cybertron. So the third film could actually take place partly on Cybertron!
Maybe I’m just grasping at straws right now, but I think they could make things work. If Megatron is confirmed for Revenge of the Fallen, then you can bet I will let you all know! Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will hit theaters on June 24th, 2009.
