PROJECTED NUMBER OF 3-D MOVIE THEATERS, (END OF 2008)
WORLDWIDE: 3000
US: 2000
THE 3-D AGENDA continues to gain new ground as more and more theaters are adapting their cameras and screens into 3-D compliant venues. I recently found out that one of my favorite films of 2008, Speed Racer was almost made as a 3-D film. The only thing that prevented it was the cost.
If Speed Racer had been a huge success the sequel would have undoubtedly been shot in FULL 3-D. That would have been a tragedy as Speed Racer was so trippy and innovative that a 3-D version would have surely caused some people (and kids) to have seizures. Have you ever sat next to someone in a theater (watching a 3-D film no less) while they go into a seizure? Let’s just say it ruins the movie. If the person having the seizure is eating popcorn it could turn tragic. Sounds funny until it happens to you ! Anyway no matter what I want its up to (YOU). At some point you will have to support the 3-D, agenda or reject it.
Here’s some of the rumors floating out there concerning upcoming 3-D films. The biggest (almost confirmed) rumor is that Peter Jackson’s, The Hobbit, will be a full 3-D trilogy. However last I heard, there’s still some pending legal action going on with that franchise, and the 3-D angle has yet to be confirmed. Peter Jackson, also wants to re-release The Lord of the Rings Trilogy in FULL THEATRICAL 3-D. Starting in 2013 with The Fellowship of the Ring, then in 2014 with The Two Towers, following up with The Return of the King in 2015. There’s also rumors that Peter Jackson’s King Kong will get a 10 year anniversary, THEATRICAL 3-D, re-release treatment in 2015.
If the Death Star wasn’t spinning out of control enough, everyone’s favorite Director George Lucas wants to re-release the entire Star Wars epic as a 3-D film experience. First in theaters and then on DVD / BlueRay. At this time the 3-D technology isn’t quite up to his standards, if that isn’t a ironic conundrum I don’t know what is ?
Of course Marvel’s The Avengers is being strongly considered as a 3-D film. Jon Favreau has said that Marvel wants to take The Avengers to a whole new level. We will have to wait until July 15th, 2011 to see if that happens, however if moviegoers support 3-D films, were gonna be screwed and 3-D will take over. If 3-D takes off in 2009 and 2010, this will be Marvels big 3-D 2011 Tent Pole summer film…
Have any interest in watching 1979’s Dawn of the Dead re-released into 3-D ? Or how about Toy Story 2 in 3-D ? Like zombies they’re coming…
Depending on the success of Crank 2, there’s plans to make the sequel in 2011. Its going to be called Crank 3-D. Don’t you just love the clever way they slip 3-D into the titles ?
Here’s some other future tentative 3-D releases:
- Horror Tour 3-D
- Call of the Wild 3-D
- Oceans 3-D: Voyage of the Turtle
- Pirates of the Caribbean 4: 3-D
- Shrek 5: 3-D

- Punk Farm 3-D
- The Legend of Spyro – a CGI 3-D Film
- A re-release of the 60’s classic 3-D film, The Stewardesses
- And last but not least,Robocop 3-D.
For your dis-consideration, here’s the upcoming 3-D film release schedule for 2009. (This doesn’t include the numerous Disney, Dreamworks, Pixar films that are tentatively being remade and or re-released as 3-D films on DVD/BlueRay. As well as anything I might have missed at the time I wrote this:)

THE 3-D WAR, continues on the TV front as well. Back on December 18th 2008, London News Corp. Satcaster BSkyB, demonstrated 3-D TV in London, claiming it has passed a significant milestone. Execs aired 3-D clips from TV shows GLADIATORS and sporting events, including a clip of British boxing champion RICKY HATTON, on a regular TV receiver using a HD set-top box.
BSkyB’s director of strategic product development Gerry O’ Sullivan said, “we have shown it is a technical reality. Now we have to bring it to viewers.” He said, ” 3-D TV used existing HD infrastructure. We haven’t had a chance to develop the new set-top box.” BSkyB has no date for rolling out the service, which still requires viewers to wear special glasses. 3-D TV is already available in Japan, and January’s Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show is expected to feature a number of new 3-D TVs.
To further advance 3-D, technology through TV broadcast synergy, the MONSTERS VS. ALIENS trailer will be broadcast during the February 1st 2009 SUPERBOWL. The TV presentation will feature the first ever 3-D movie trailer. It will later be seen as a 3-D commercial during an episode of CHUCK…
The 3-D glasses for this will be available where ever Pepsi products are sold. (How wonderful)
Its up to you to resist, if you support 3-D by attending these films and watching these shows then within 10 years everything will be 3-D. Is that what you really want ?
