“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is the perfect prequel to the Harry Potter movies and a start of a new adventure and potentially new franchise [there are five films already planned]. It still manages to capture the familiar style and tone to the Potter movies. A cast of new and instantly likeable characters, comedy adventure and sinister force at work.
Eddie Redmayne is perfectly cast as Newt Scamander, a character who prefers the company magical beasts than real people. He’s quirky, shy and instantly likeable as the film’s protagonist.
Dan Fogler plays the films comic relief ad Non-Maj, Kowalski, who just come back from serving in the war and wants a bank loan to set up his own bakery business.
Colin Farrell plays “Graves”, head of magic security in New York and the protector of the secrecy of the Wizarding world from muggles. With the help of investigator “Tina” [Katherine Waterston], who first notices Newt and his magical suitcase.
David Yates who directed the recent “Tarzan” movie and the previous four Harry Potter films has put his stamp on creating an entirely new world and adventure. The set pieces are huge and impressive and are something out of a them park ride.
The action is non-stop most enjoyable are the scenes in which Newt has to capture the beasts lost in famous New York locations. The beasts themselves created by J.K. Rowling [who also wrote the screenplay] are memorable and instantly loveable with both children and grown ups.
