Draft Day, talk about a good movie to tease during the Super Bowl! Fans are already pumped up about football, then you throw them a trailer about, what? You guessed it, football!
There really aren’t that many football movies out there, which is surprising considering how big foot ball is. Sure, football movies exist, I’m just saying there aren’t that many.
Now Draft Day isn’t your typical football movie, which is normally and underdog team trying to overcome adversity to win the big game. No sir, Draft Day is different. It’s a story about an underdog team (The Cleveland Browns) trying to grab the first round pick. See? Nothing at all like those other underdog football movies. It actually kind of reminds me of Wolf of Wall street, just you know, football players and not stocks.
Draft Day features Kevin Costner who is no stranger to sports movie (Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and For Love of the Game).
Originally Draft Day was going to be centered around the “Buffalo Bills” but the producers ultimately decided on the Cleveland Browns since production costs are so much cheaper in Ohio. Ha! You lose again Buffalo Bills! This actually leads me to another question, what makes Ohio so lucrative for the film industry? There are a lot of films that are shot in Ohio, the cult classic The Christmas Story, and more recently Bad Grandpa. I think this would make a good podcast topic.
Another shocking fact about Draft Day, it’s a comedy! From the trailer I thought it was going to be more serious than comedic. Sure, there was some humor there but nothing that screamed “Hey laugh at this movie!” Which in hindsight is probably a good thing.
Draft Day is set to release April 11, 2014
