YES, YES, YES! Finally Jim Carrey has produced another film that isn’t total crap (The Number 23). Sure, Yes Man has it’s flaws, but overall it was a good film.
First off, let’s get to the flaws. My biggest gripe has to be Zooey Deschanel. I really think they could have casted the role of the love interest a bit better. I am going to leave it at that. My second gripe is the fact that I really felt that some more extreme humor could have come from saying yes to everything. Yeah, a few things that Carrey says yes to places him in some hillarious circumastances (like buying a Persian wife), but I really feel like they could have pushed it a bit further. Perhaps it was the creators trying to keep with the PG-13 rating.
Now that I have gotten that out of the way lets move on to the positives. This is Carrey’s first decent film in 3 years (Fun with Dick and Jane). The Number 23 nearly ruined Jim Carrey for me. I was honestly on the edge about even watching Yes Man but I am very glad I did. Yes Man has a very slow start but after the first ten-fifteen minutes pass it is all uphill! Basically as soon as he agrees to start saying yes, the film becomes an excellent comedy. Yes Man‘s comedy and humor reminded me a lot of Bruce Almighty, but with way better jokes.
The story was very original, which is hard to find in films these days. I know, someone is probably going to chime in and say that it is ripped off of another film, but I felt the story was very original.
So what is the final verdict? Give Yes Man a chance! I really think you will be glad you did.
Hopefully we will see more films like this from Carrey. I have always liked Jim Carrey, but there were just some films he wasn’t meant for. I am very excited for I Love You Phillip morris which is set to release in 09′, but I am worried that he will fall back into a slump with his part in A Christmas Carol (in 3-D).
What do you guys think? Have you seen Yes Man? Did you like it? What do you think of his future releases?
