Like sand in the hour glass,
So begans another week at Movieguys.org
Everyone here ever see Tombstone?? Any thoughts??
790
Lol,,,
“Tombstone” was along time ago, how about the great HBO show “Deadwood” now there’s some dirt in your mouth western flavor.
I’ve recently picked up the movie,”The Proposition, This Land will be Civilized” its a western set in Australia. Stars Guy Pierce. I’ll be putting up a review on that soon…
790
Ok, here’s my review of “Proposition”.
It sucks! Avoid this film. !!
The End
Jon Stephens
Too bad… Guy Pierce is one of my favorite actors.
Metallicat, Deadwood was the standard by which westerns should be measured in the modern era. Quality stuff. If you’ve never seen it, do yourself a favor and find it somewhere, ANYWHERE!!!
Wow. I just noticed we’ve really been knocking the ball out of the park with reviews lately!
JD
Again, another movie I never saw, but had high hopes for “Proposition”. 790 you are the 2nd or 3rd person to tell me ‘IT SUCKS’. Too bad.
Another great western is “Silverado”. It’s the 1985 Lawrence Kasdan flick with Keven Kline, Scott Gleen, Danny Glover, a young Kevin Costner, John Cleese, Jeff Goldblum, Brian Dennehy, Jeff Fahey, and I’m sure a couple others. Was it cutting edge? Did it change the Westerns in Hollywood, No. But it’s a really good western with a great cast. I would highly suggest checking it out if you haven’t seen it.
Jon Stephens
Silverado was pretty good. But it wasn’t a great cast, it was an amazing cast. Keven Kline, Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, John Cleese, and Jeff Goldblum are all personal favorites of mine. I’ll second JD’s recommendation of Silverado. Check it out if you like westerns.
Speaking of that, I’m really disappointed that for the most part, the western genre is essentially dead. I really like westerns. I would love to see them make a comeback. With any luck, Jonah Hex with Josh Brolin will bring the genre back to prominence. Maybe then we could see a Deadwood movie!
790
I wanted to write up a review, but it just sucked so bad it would have been a waste of time for everyone… I wasted 2 hours watching that one.
I’m going to make it up by re-viewing another western.
“Now Starring Poncho Villa as Himself,” starring Antonio Banderas. Should have that up soon,,,
790
I’m going to see “Fanboys” today, I’ll have a review up asap !!!
Metallicat79
To be hinest, i never was a real big fan of westerns, I happened to think of Tombstone, because it is my favorite Western followed by Unforgiven and 3:10 to Yuma.
Though i am not much of an expert when it comes to Westerns, i will agree with you Jon, Westerns certainly do not have the same calibre they did back in the day.
And just update 790 and Jon, I did finally watch the rest of the first episode of Dexter. It was Awesome, i must say, still have not found a chanel that broadcasts it though. BUT I did recently find the chanel that broadcasts Burn Notice, i thought we did not have the subscription for it, but low and behold we do, i am totally stoked now!! We watched bits and peices of Burn Notice, and I loved what i saw, I luaghed really hard. We also tuned into Trust ME, with Eric McCormick, That was an awesome show, we liked both so much we added it to our repat viewing on our digital box. So there you have it, you tell me to go out and watch and I return and report!!
Stan-Lee
2 Mules for Sister Sara, and Hang em’ High are my two all time fav’s. They were some of the first non-childrens movies I ever watched and I loved them.
3:10 to Yuma was also superb. I loved the entire story, and the ending was phenomenal. I never expected that from a modern day western.
metallicat79
I thought 3:10 to Yuma was phenomanal, Russel Crowe (who i normally do not enjoy all that much) really stole the show.
Stan-Lee
I too normally hate russel crowe
metallicat79
I really don’t undertand why people like him, he is not that talented.
Jon Stephens
3:10 was pretty good, I liked it.
Metallicat
Glad you have finally discovered the joys that are Dexter and Burn Notice. Fantastic shows. I won’t miss an episode!
metallicat79
I wish iwould have watched the entire episode of Burn Notice, It feels like one of those shows you do not really have to watch from the begining to really get whats going on.
I Am really getting into Trust Me, You watch that ine at all Jon?
the one and only momo
jeff goldblum… haha
my boyfriend has a jeff goldblum action figure from when he was in jurassic park. i thought it was AMAZING :]
the one and only momo
sorry, late again to the party…
i prefer to think of it as fashinably late…
by like a day…
Stan-Lee
Better late than never :) Maybe someday you will make it ontime :)
Jon Stephens
I’ve seen trust me. It’s okay, though I’m not a big fan of either of those guys. The show is good enough for me to watch, if there is nothing else on
metallicat79
I found Trust me to be the opposite, I find it witty and well written, though, normaly I enjoy Monica Potter, i cannot stand her on the show, too whine.
Metallicat79
@Jon, 790, Stan, Ergo, Bear
Any of you guys big on Tim Burton at all?? if you guys like him at all, you should each pick your fav and reiew, if it has not been reviewed?? Any thoughts??
I also saw a few months back, on Rotten Tomatoes, one of their writers did this 21 days of Bond where he watched and reviewed a Bond film a day starting from the Dr.No and ending with Casino Royale, would anyone be interested in doing something like that and putting some sort of Movie Guy Twist to it?? The writer at Rotten Tomatoes, supposadlily had never seen a Bond film in their life (I disagree). Any Thoughts on that?
JD
Wanted to share with the Movie Guys that the trailer for Tarantino’s new film “Inglourious Basterds” has been posted over on Yahoo Movies. The Nobodies are sure to be talking about it on this weeks show, but wanted to give you a heads-up in case you were interested.
Personally Tarantino is hit and miss with me. His movies are “fun” at times, it bothers me how he is placed up on a pedestal in the world of filmmakers. I hope this movie is one of his “good ones” though I kinda had a confusion vibe from the trailer. If you listen to the podcast next week, I’m sure you’ll hear a handful of other opinions…
the one and only momo
I LOVE TIM BURTON!!!
I love the way his movies look. He gives that eerie look and the animation he does for movies like nightmare before christmas, corpse bride, and james and the giant peach is fabulous! I really love the contrst he does in edward scissorhands. Where suburbia is all bright and colorful (yet still eerie) and the castle overlooking suburbia is dark and mysterious. He’s a genious.
Metallicat79
@JD
I just watched it and I could not quite get a feel for what type of film this will be. I too was confused.
I do enjoy Tarentino, i think he is talented at writing. But i do grow a little annoyed with his constent Homages to Spagetti Westerns and Asian Film and B Movies. What I would like to see from him is something that is more story and character based than blatently trying to impress you with his love and admiration for those and other genres of film. Quentin: WE GET IT!!! Can we please move on, Thank you.
Metallicat79
@ Momo
I ahve to say I really enjoy all his films, there has not been one that has disspointed me yet.
I really enjoyed Sweeny Todd, the way he used that contrast to illustrate that the main cahractors (Depp and His wife Carter) did not fit in the world they are so desperatly trying to. Though my personal favorite would be a tie between Beetljuice and Sleepy Hollow. Least Favorite would have to be MArs Attacks.
the one and only momo
kill bill kinda pissed me off.
i think it was too long for my taste. although i did find myself laughing here and there just because the fight scenes are so outrageous
Metallicat79
Kill Bill you either loved or hated it. Personally I found Vol 1 to be very entertaining, while Vol 2 was slower and lost me deu to boredom. But as a whole, it was a great story and it was done very well. I found the best parts were anything that had Oren Ishi (Lucy Lui), i really enjoyed that character. As well I really enjoyed the one scene right at the begining of Vol 2 where it refernces Film Noir, I thought that was awesome.
Jon Stephens
Tarrantino is cool in my book. I watched the trailer, thanks JD. I still don’t know about this film though.
You didn’t like MARS ATTACKS?!? Why not? I loved that freaking movie! My dad collected the original bubblegum pack trading cards back when he was a kid. I got to look through some of them before they were stolen. Really cool stuff and I thought the film really stayed true to the spirit of the product.
Metallicat79
@Jon
WHOA!! Back Up the Holy Shit Train!!! I never said that I did not like Mars Attacks, I only said it was my least faorite of Burton’s films, Mars Attacks had its very funny moments, and did make laugh and was for the most part entertaining. By no means to i dislike it. I just did not find it to be Burtons best work.
790
WHOA!! Back Up the Holy Shit Train!!!
That’s a classic line,,,
Metallicat79
@790
All For you.
So i went out on a very long limb and downloaded Season 1 of Burn Notice, since we cannot afford a PVR or Tivo at the moment and m wife was hellbent to watch Greys Anatomy last night, so i missed Burn Notice last night, however i believe that there is an Encore showing on Sunday and Wednesday nexy week, so maybe I can catch it then and convince my wife that The Mentalist won’t last much longer and to give it up now.
the one and only momo
Mars attacks was great! i didnt even know that was a tim burton movie… its pretty different from his usually stuff.
sleepy hollow was great too! Christopher walken looked so creepy in that movie! very different than what im used to from him.
@metallicat
u never convince a woman to give up a show!!! it might just backfire on u!!! just a red flag from a woman… i dont give up my shows for ANYONE. lol
Metallicat79
@Momo
OH!! So thats why I have failed in the past, Got it!! Thanks for the insight.

Where has everyone been this week? NOt a lot of action?
790
I’ve been super busy at work, but I have some reviews coming this weekend and also an article on the upcoming IFC Spirit Awards,,,
I think Jons working on some new posts as well as a few new trailers,,, :)
Jon Stephens
It’s been a busy week for me guys, but I’m putting up some cool new stuff tonight and tomorrow. Up now: The Education of Charlie Banks trailer. Enjoy
FaDE 2 bLaCK 79
Sounds good, I keep checking the site and see nothing new. Cannot wait too see and post random and offensive comments to them, hehehe.
Anyone gong to be watcihing Dollhouse tonight?? I know I will be, Been excited for this one since i heard about, being a Whedon fan, thiugh i never really did get into Buffy, too much Teenage angst for me
790
Lol, I won’t be watching the Dollhouse ever,,, as I can’t stand Weadon’s tv shows.
Instead I will hopfully be writing up a review to “The International” that new Clive Owen flick? If not that I need to write up my Ben Button Review.
FaDE 2 bLaCK 79
Go with The International, i would rather hear about that than Brad Pitt as some old dude with some aging impedament or whatever.
You did not even like Firefly?? I thought (and i am guessing here) that a sci fi junky like yourelf would have loved something like that.
790
Lol, you got it Metallicat,,,
I feel the same about Ben Butts, but I do have a screener for that one.
Jon Stephens
Firefly was great, the rest of Whedon’s stuff stinks. I too will never ever watch Dollhouse. I don’t care how hot that chick it!
Another interesting trailer just went up for the action thriller “Echelon Conspiracy.” Worth a look.
Next on the docket: A “special” valentines day post for all you guys out there looking to “score.”
790
Yeah I can watch Firefly and even Alien 4 had some good scenes, but overall I can’t stand the Wheldon..
FaDE 2 bLaCK 79
I am on eof the few that really enjoyed Alien 4, thought it was better than 3 (IMO). Looks like a lonly noght for me, my wife won’t watch it either.
I really Loved Firefly, I wish that it had lasted longer than it did and Serentity was Awesome!!! I actaully found out recently that Whedon was involved in Toy Story, totally blew me away.
790
Yeah Alien 4, (imo) was the inspiration for Firefly.
790
Have you seen the directors cut of Alien 4, there’s a great alternate ending.
metallicat79
I think i caught it many years ago. bubt I really don’t remember it.
790
The directors cut has a few extra min at the end that depict a pretty wasted Earth.
Its cool in a way because in that extended scene you realize that mankind is totally a space faring race as Earth has been long left behind…
Kinda reminds me of the premise of the new Red Dwarf mini-series. Back to Earth.
Remember Lister was in Cyro for millions of years… What’s Ea3th gonna look like?
metallicat79
Never really got into Red Dwarf, Did not appeal me.
790
(An acquired taste)
Yeah Red Dwarf is a British comedy. I really like the actors on the show. Even Lister grows on ya.
Rimmer is the heart and soul of the cast, and he’s a hologram,,, lol…
It is one of my top 5 sci-fi shows of all time…
FaDE 2 bLaCK 79
So I watched Dollhouse. Well Sort of. Whether it was due to the exhaustion of the week or something else I watched the forst and last 15 minutes of Dollhouse and allow me to tell you, it borderline blew. It failed to grab my attention, as I fell asleep for half of the show. I spent the forst 15 minutes in a confused state as the story kept jumping, which I found irratating. When you starta brand new show, it’s OK to be mysterious and elusive, but you have to give the Audience something to ease a little bit of their curiosity, Dollhouse failed to do this, I was in the dark for that first bit. And maybe because I fell asleep after that first bit i missed it, but there was a lack if character devlopment, i did not know who anyone was including Elisha Dusku. When I woke up for the remaining 15 minutes of the show, i was surprised that I was able to pick up from where i had left off, I knew what was going on. Perhaps Dollhouse may make a better half hour show than and hour if this is the case. But at any rate, without giving too much away, Echo (Dusku) begins to break down and remember things from prior assignments, which when she finishes an assignment, is supposadly wiped from her memory.
Does this plot sound familiar? It should, because it follows a simliar premise from a show that started earlier this season and was canceled after only 10 episodes, a little show that was suposed to Christian Slaters resurgence, My Own Worst Enemy.
I am not going to hold my breath, but i am going to say that Dollhouse will meet the same fate, it wil definetly last longer than 10 epsisdes becuase Of Whedon, but in the end, Whedon will find himself, yet again with another canceled series.
Now onto the highlight of my TV night last night, Initially I had given up on Terminator:TSCC. I felt that the show had lost its way and crappy acting from Shirley Manson, the lack of attention Cameron was recieving storywise and Sarah being a whiney and crazy bitch and don’t get me started on Derrick. But like i always do, I tuned in and deicided to give T:TCC another chance (I Did the same for Heroes, with shitty results). Let me tell you, MAN WAS I IMPRESSED! I loved every minute of last n ights episode, I do not know what i missed previously, but the feel and the story, it did not really matter, as long as you had the core knowledge of what was going on. When did Sarah grow a pair of Balls?? And when did John begin to start calling the shots and telling everyone else to fuck off? I even enjoyed Derrick, i though he had some genuine emotion to a charactor that had been played very stale and listliss earlier in the season. Overall, i really enjoyed it, though it is not without its flaws. For starters, The whole John Henry thing still pisses me off. They should have left that character dead and gone and just brought back a different terminator. There was a lack of Cameron kicking Ass, which is one reason i Tune in, i am a fan of Summer Glau, and it is awesome to see her kick ass, but she reall was useless in this episode, and if i remember, she only had like two lines throughout. And finally, I feel that they really screwed up with Kyle Reese. The acto the got to play him, though he resembles John, looked like a real douche and just did not look (IMO) the way Kyle Reese should. That partially due to Michael Bien being the only person that should ever play Kyle Reese, but if you are going to cast someone to play the part at least get him to look remotly like the original ( A common error that they have made throughout the series with other Terminator Cahracters). Reese is one of the pivotal characters in the Termintor realm, if you screw him up, it will alienate a large number of teh Terminator fan base (IMO). You CAN”T SCREW HIM UP!! Even the acting and the presentation of his dialogues was dine poorly. All in all, Episode was awesome, Kyle Reese, was not.
Jon Stephens
Red Dwarf was great, and I can’t wait to see how the new material will work out. Love that show! Thanks for turning me on to that one 790!
The special ending of that Alien movie was about the only cool thing from the whole film, in my book. Just did’nt like it.
I couldn’t watch Dollhouse, I just can’t bring myself to watch it. I will agree that the show is already doomed. Sticking a show on friday nights, especially a new one, is a clear sign that no one expects the show to last or even be any good. Friday is one of the worst tv nights, second only to saturday. That’s when people go out. The add revenue just isn’t there like it is on Wed. and Thurs, or even Sun. All this also means that terminator is doomed too. And after last nights episode, I wouldn’t care at all.
I’ve watched every episode of that show. I may have said this before, but I watch it because there are some cool things in it. But I don’t consider it a part of the terminator mythos AT ALL! I just think of it as a show with some decent action that happens to feature robots disguised as humans and a mom named Sarah and a son named John. That’s it. But last nights episode had none of the stuff I’d grown to enjoy from the show. The action was lame, save for the Shirley Manson going ape-shit on that wherehouse. And the whole “John’s girlfriend” storyline is getting lamer and lamer by the second. And why the hell did they try to feature Kyle Reese? They had better not bring him back or I will be done with that show. That whole hallucination thing was a lame gimmick. I really don’t like the whole “John Henry” story either. It’s supposed to be a super smart computer system, smarter than any human that ever lived. But since they hooked the terminator up to it, it’s started acting like a retarded 5 year old. It’s freaking ridiculous. I’m giving this show one last episode, and if next friday is no good then I’m walking away completely.
I like Summer Glau and I like explosions and death, but not enough to put up with some of the crap they’ve been showing recently.
FaDE 2 bLaCK 79
I stopped watching when they decided to bring back the Termiantor, it really pissed me off, so I Have not really followed it since then, so i came into it not knowing how Sarah got where she was. I went into watching it last noght with the expectation that that it would still be sucky, but it belew my expecation out of the water.
I like that John Is becoming the man and tougher, but I agree that the who Giirlfriend thing is stupid, they need to resolve that someway, he needs to get closer to Cameron, IMO.
Shirley Manson going Ape Shit, was the best part!! Thats what they need more of.
Doll House really was a disspointment for me. I was reved up and excited and unless i missed something while i was sleeping, it was a real let down, don’t be surprised if you see this in the Discount bin 1 year from now.
FaDE 2 bLaCK 79
The best Alien Flick out of the series was Aliens, loved that one!
790
I never understood why in TSCC they allowed Sarah to have black hair… For some reason, that one flaw made me loose interest in the show to a certain degree.
They seem to always screw up Kyle Reese’s casting look. Even the new film kinda blows it with Yetchen as Reese…
At this point I haven’t watched TSCC in so long that maybe I’ll get season 2 on dvd one day,,,
Stan-Lee
Hey everyone, the new rundown is posted,
https://movieguys.org/weekly-rundown/weekly-rundown-2152009/
