This after noon I was bored out of my mind so I headed to the local video store to find myself some entertainment for the evening. While I was perusing the same old titles I have seen over and over again, I saw it. The Onion Movie. I have read The Onion for years now (on and off) , and had completely forgotten about the movie. So I immediately grabbed the last copy and headed home.
For those of you who haven’t heard about The Onion, it is self proclaimed as “America’s finest news source.” They are a very satirical weekly publication and as of recently they have done very well releasing some very funny videos that are streaming on their website (TheOnion.com). There news is updated every Wednesday.
So, I get the movie home, and pop it in, and press play. I was definitely in for a ride. The film started out as several little clips all somehow linked together. These clips were exactly the same style of humor as their web channel, except they were able to get a little bit raunchier.
Me being an Onion lover I was very pleased with the beginning of the film. I was laughing like crazy and couldn’t wait to see how these clips would tie into the storyline. That is when it hit me, this was it. There was nothing else. The entire story was nothing more than several clips linked together by just a few common interests.
It may just be me, but after an hour of watching these clips I was almost done. I really enjoy The Onion, and their quick clips, but slicing them all together into a feature length film is just ridiculous. I stuck it out to the end, but I can’t help but feel that I was ripped off.
So what is my final conclusion?
The Onion Movie is a good film, just not a good one to watch all at once. If I would have just watched it in bits and pieces over time I think that I would have liked it much better. Most all of the skits, and jokes they pulled were funny, but the idea of calling this a movie just wasn’t a good one. Personally I feel that they really should have just made their quirks into a web series, to me that would have been more enjoyable. But if you are going to watch the DVD be sure to at least watch the final scene, Rodney Dangerfield makes an appearance and possible has the funniest part in the whole film. He totally steals the scene for the 10 seconds he is on camera.
If you have seen the film, what did you think? Was it worth watching or not?
