Let us start by stating a few things. #1, I hate remastered, re-tooled, re-animated, whatever you want to call it films. #2, I generally hate 3D films, and #3, I mostly hate Star Wars: Episode I. While I hate all of these things, I am still excited that the film is coming back to the big screen.
3D, my arch nemesis:
Normally I would automatically dismiss any film being presented in 3D. It is merely a gimmick and adds little to most serious films. It’s great for children’s flicks or movies geared towards little girls, but there is really no place for it in a serious film. However, all of my hatred for re-tooling aside, Star Wars may very well be a decent candidate for 3D. There is just something somewhat appealing about an intense, over the top, light saber battle. I still feel it is unnecessary, yet I am not completely appalled by it… Yet.
Re-Releasing Star Wars:
I am actually rather excited that they are re-releasing Star Wars. Seeing as how I wasn’t alive yet to see the original 3 (IV, V, and VI) in theaters, I am hopeful that this is just the start, and the original trilogy will also return. I just hope they leave them alone and don’t butcher them with edits and whatnot.
Conclusion:
Like most topics I write about, I am a bit on the fence regarding a 3D Star Wars re-release. On one hand, getting to see the films back in theaters would be rather refreshing. Sure, I can watch them at home for free as I have many times, but it just isn’t the same. But on the other, I know that this isn’t what Star Wars should be. 3D? Remastered? C’mon! The films were great as they were, there was no need for them to be “made better.”
I leave you with the trailer for Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace re-release in 3D. Am I being too much of a purist? Are the changes necessary? Will 3D make the film better? What are your thoughts on the film?
