Ready Player One is a science fiction action-adventure from legendary director Steven Spielberg. It based on the best-seller by Ernest Cline that has become a worldwide phenomenon.
The film is set in 2045 in Columbus Ohio. With the world on the brink of collapse, the people have found salvation in the OASIS. The OASIS is a virtual reality world where anyone can be whoever they want. When the creator of the OASIS software, James Halliday dies he releases a video to challenge all the OASIS users to find his Easter Egg. Halliday’s Egg will give the finder his fortune and control of the OASIS.
Ready Player One: The good
Ready Player One is one of Steven Spielberg’s best movies in years. It hangs with other serious dramas such as “Lincoln”, “Bridge of Spies” and “The Post”. Its great to see Spielberg back in blockbuster mode. Ready Player One is a visual treat which straps the audience member into a roller coaster ride.
Rising star Tye Sheridan plays Wade who’s virtual reality avatar also known as Parzival, after starring as Cyclops in “X-Men Apocalypse”, and horror/comedy “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse”. Tye Sheridan is an actor to watch out for and is perfectly cast as the hero.
Olivia Cook stars as the OASIS’s legendary player ARt3mis, also known in the real world as Samantha, after starring in Universal’s hit series “Bates’s Motel”.
Ben Mendelsohn plays “Nolan Sorrento”, the head of a corporate organization Innovative Online Industries [IOI], who also wants Halliday’s fortune in the OASIS. Sorrento is someone who will stop at nothing to get it, whether it be in the virtual reality world or the real world.
Mark Rylance plays James Halliday, who is portrayed as a Steve Jobs/Willy Wonka type character. Halliday created the OASIS software with his best pal Ogden Morrow.
Ready Player One is an action-packed blockbuster that features a great central cast with similarities to “The Goonies” or “Super 8” and is full of 80’s Nostalgia with an awesome soundtrack. The transition from the OASIS to the real world is seamless, with a mix of practical effects and CGI.
Ready Player One: The bad
Ready Player One is a near-perfect blockbuster, but can sometimes be hard to follow story wise. This is especially true for people who haven’t read the book. Also, a lot of 80’s references will be lost on younger viewers, but adults will love it.

Overall, Ready Player One is the perfect Spielberg blockbuster and reminds us why we fell in love with his movies in the first place. It’s a nod to the 80’s and some of his greatest hits. Ready Player One is a non-stop roller coaster ride that is a visual treat from start to finish. Also, there is an extended horror sequence that is thrilling and iconic.
