People close to me would tell you that I am not a big fan of Jack Black. I’m sorry, I just think the guy sucks. I don’t like his movies and I don’t think he is funny at all. So I am normally not interested in finding out about his upcoming projects. But I just found an image from his new film The Year One and now I am cautiously curious. So I decided to look into the project a little more to find out exactly what is up with this movie. And that has only served to up my curiosity even more. The Year One is a comedy from Harold Ramis (Ghostbusters, Groundhogs Day) that is set in biblical times. It appears that this film has all stars involved at every level. It’s been written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, writers for tv’s The Office. And the cast if full of comedy heavyweights: Jack Black, Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse from Superbad, David Cross, Hank Azaria, and my personal favorite Paul Rudd. Are you as interested as I am right now?
Well, here is what is known about the plot of the film. It is an original idea of Raimis’. The plot, centered in biblical times, features characters direct from the bible including Cain, Able and Abraham. Here is the official synopsis as posted over at IMDB: When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Black and Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.
Now this seems to be a religious comedy. That may set a lot of people off from the very beginning. I am not going to get into religion here except to say that even I am weary of religious comedies because of the backlash they could cause if they were handled insensitively. But so far, I haven’t found any evidence to suggest that this could be the case. There has been no outcry from any religious groups. Now, if that doesn’t offend you, I would like to pose a question. What do you think about this movie? Does it sound interesting at all?
The Year One is current set for release on June 19th, 2009.
