Beowulf

November 19, 2007 By Craig Layne 3 Comments

When I first heard news of Beowulf, I was stoked. I love this epic tale, and thought it would make a great film, fit for the silver screen. Then, I heard it was goi8ng to feature Angelina Jolie. I thought that Beowulf would be a great role for her, really it is right up her alley after her great performance with the Tomb Raider series. I watched a few trailers and I noticed something was a little off. After doing some research the movie was ruined for me, it was being done with CGI animation.

The Pros
After finding out that the film would be entirely done in CGI, I was totally bummed. I thought that the movie would be ruined for me. Anyways, I was able to see Beowulf this weekend, and was surprised with the quality of the film. CGI just wasn’t enough to ruin the story for me, and there were some pretty cool effects and scenes. It has been a long time since I have read the tale of Beowulf, but much of the movie is very accurate to the story. The CGI used was really amazing, and I was very surprised with the quality. If you get a chance, I highly recommend making the trip to an I-max or 3-D cinema to see this feature.

The downsides
Even though the CGI was excellent, it is still cartoonish. Some scenes were better than others but in the end it is still a cartoon. Another disappointment is the lack of Angelina Jolie. The previews made it seem that she was going to appear a fair bit in the movie, but sadly she only makes a few appearances.

Conclusion
Too much CGI, not enough naked Angelina Jolie
