Looks like Justin Long is really trying to branch out. Most of you know him for his comedic performances on the played out “I’m a Mac/I’m a PC” commercials and his forgettable roles in a handful of comedies. Can you tell I’m not a fan? Anyway, he landed a key supporting role in Live Free or Die Hard a couple years back, getting his first taste of action stardom. I guess he liked it. Take a look at his upcoming slate of films, and you’ll find less comedies than you will action/drama/horror. Now, I’m sure every actor wants to be more. Surely, Justin Long doesn’t want to just be a comedy “star.” Check out the trailer for his upcoming flick, Battle for Terra. It’s an animated film, so it’s a little harder to gauge his talent in the genre by watching that trailer. But combine that with Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell and After Life, and you begin to see the pattern. More power to him. As for Battle for Terra, this looks like a decent sci-fi flick to me. I’m not expecting greatness, because if you ask me, great sci-fi films are not animated. But this could be a interesting. I really like the concept behind the story. It has loads of potential. Check out the plot description, courtesy of IMDB:
“Mala is a precocious girl living on the beautiful planet Terra, a place where peace and tolerance are celebrated. Unbeknownst to Mala and her fellow Terrians, the last inhabitants of Earth have exhausted the resources of their planet and those of three others, and are now searching for a new home. This Earthforce has discovered that the use of a Terraformer will make Terra habitable for humans but poisonous for Terrians. When the Earthlings embark on a hostile invasion of Terra, Mala’s father, Roven, is kidnapped. Hoping to save her father, Mala captures and hides a crashed human pilot named Jim. While Mala nurses Jim back to health, the two forge a friendship and a plan that could save both the human race and the planet of Terra. Soon, however, they realize that peace will not be secured unless they can combat both the Terraformer and dark political forces that will stop at nothing in their drive to achieve power for power’s sake.”
So, is anyone out there interested in checking this one out?
