After watching American Gangster i left the theater very torn. One part of me loved the movie, and the story. The other part of me hated what I just watched. I know, confusing right? I really had a hard time deciding whether I liked the film or not. Throughout the film I would get excited, and things would get really good, but all of that excitement would soon be let down by several long, boring scenes.
It is very easy to spot the positive sides of this film. Several parts are filled with action, and scenes that will just blow your mind. The story is amazing! I love stories like this, and the fact that it is based on a true story makes it that much better. Several times throughout the movie I found myself comparing it to the movie Blow. Several times during the film I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering where the film will go next.
One word, Denzel Washington (I guess 2 words). Overall the film was great, the story was solid, but I just could not accept Denzel Washington as a self centered drug dealer. He is a great actor, but not very diverse. He was just not right for the part. Also, several times during the movie, I found there was just too much filler. It went up and down, and at times I just hoped the movie was over.
Overall, I believe that I enjoyed the film. The great story tied with the all-star cast, just really made for a good film. It had it’s ups and downs, but for the most part I enjoyed the film. Don’t look for it to be the fall blockbuster, but still a great pick for a Friday night movie.
