The reboot/remake machine continues: New Teen Wolf on the way?

Teen Wolf

Teen Wolf

Well, it looks like the reboot/remake machine just keeps on churning out recycled ideas, and Hollywood exec’s continue to to think this is a good idea.   The latest property rumored to get the reboot/remake treatment?  Teen Wolf.  Yes that classic 80’s Michael J. Fox film will get a fresh coat of paint.  Word is that Jerry Levine, who currently works on T.V’s “Everybody hates Chris”  and previously played the classic character Rupert “Stiles” Stilinski in Teen Wolf, is in talks with the folks over at MGM to bring the character back to movie fans everywhere in either a theatrical release OR a direct-to-DVD release.  ”Stiles”  would direct the discussed project and may even make a cameo in said film.

I don’t know about you, but I loved Teen Wolf.  It was a lot of fun, and I still watch the movie from time to time.  I even enjoyed the sequel, Teen Wolf Too.  It was where I discovered one of my favorite comedic actors of all time, Jason Bateman.  So I am not as disgusted by this news as some of you may be right now.  I don’t fully embrace the potential for ruining one of my favorite 80’s films of all time, yet I do not fully reject the idea either.  If they managed to find a young actor as charismatic and talented as Michael J. Fox was in the project, it may actually turn out to be okay.  I’m at a loss for ideas on casting right now.  I just can’t think of a comparable actor to Michael J. Fox to star in this film.  Maybe you could play casting director and help us out?  Hopefully, Levine realizes that a decent remake of this classic hinges on finding the “new”  Michael J. Fox.   What do you think of this rumored reboot/remake?

    @Studebaker Dude
    Nope. But on your recommendation I will check it out.

    @790
    HAHAHA! Jonah Hill. I seriously hope not. And you are probably right about Jackson. He is in everything nowadays.

    I’m sure Shia Labeouf’s name is being thrown out for the part but I’d like to see Michael Cera get it. Actually, I’d like to see Cera cast in the Back to the Future remake as well.

    I’d also like to see Movieguys hire some younger critics that don’t automatically think any and every proposed remake will ruin the original. No one’s touching the original, it’s still there.

    How about reviewing some of the original films and petitioning studios on re-releasing them for a bit, get the original films some much needed exposure instead of only bringing them up once rumors of a remake come up.

    I would love to see Michael Cera in this. It would be a great role for him.

    And actually FuMikechu, I am only 25. I don’t think every remake will automatically ruin the original. For evidence of that, you should check out my post on Reboots/remakes. I actually referrence some good remakes. The problem is that the VAST majority of them stink. Plain and simple. And I personally would rather watch some new, original films that cover things that have not been addressed fully before. I think that studio’s are taking the easy way out, that’s all.

    If I ever got to the point where I had the influence to make some changes in Hollywood, I most certainly would try to get the originals more exposure. That is another thing I addressed in the aforementioned article.

    I love the ideas man, Michael Cera is awesome. And I hope whatever becomes of this project, if it ever gets made, I hope it is good.

    Prove me wrong Hollywood. Make some quality remakes and I will change my tune!

    That post, by the way, is entitled “Reboots and Remakes: Hollywood is killing the classics”

    The vast majority of remakes do stink but that’s probably the same ratio of original films that suck as well.

    There are some great remakes out there like The Thing and Oceans Eleven. Wasn’t Assault on Precinct 13 a private Carpenter remake of Rio Bravo? What about The Magnificent Seven from The Seven Samurai? Of course there will always be more bad remakes than good ones, just like there will always be more god awful original films than good ones.

    You are absolutely right. And I slam the original films that stink just as much as I slam reboots that stink. I thought Oceans Eleven was really good as well. It is one of the remakes that I enjoy. Sorry to say I have to disagree with the other remakes you mentioned. I didn’t really like those, although my dislike for them had nothing to do with the films they were based on.

    The fun thing about movies is that people will always disagree. You can’t please everyone. The people who like them will continue to support them, and as a serious movie fan I will too. In the hopes that they get better. But if they stink I will continue to slam them in the hopes that the bad remakes stop, and we actually get some good ones, or some original films. In the end, I just want to see some good movies, as I’m sure you do too.

    What? You didn’t like Carpenter’s The Thing? Or Assault on Precinct 13? I’m not talking about the remake of Precinct 13, I’m talking about Carpenter’s version.

    I didn’t really like the Thing. I can’t really figure out why, just something. Maybe I should watch it again with a couple more years under my belt.

    Precinct 13, you aren’t talking about the one with Ethan Hawke are you? See, thing with some of these remakes is that it gets hard to seperate the original from the remake for me sometimes.

    Jon check out The Thing again cause its one of Carpenters best films.

    Assault on Police Station 13, was that any good. I remember the original with Lou Gossett Jr, I think it was him?

    I’ll watch it again. I’ve seen it before, but it was when I was 14 and I remember not liking it. Not disliking it, just not enjoying it too much. But I’ll check it out again.

    I remember the original Precinct 13 and I liked it. It’s the Ethan Hawk/Lawrence Fishburne one I don’t like. Maybe I got them confused. It’s been a long day so far today.
