The next installment of the X-Men series is here. Since I haven’t posted a review in a long time, and for my comeback I decided to wait for this movie because it was my favorite comic growing up. I also liked the cartoon series really well. I have seen all of the rest of the movies and like all of them except Last Stand.
I was a little confused in the beginning of the movie, but my confusion was cleared up and explained very shortly after the opening sequence. The special effects were on par with the latest movies that are out now. I even think they are getting better at transitioning Mystique’s transformations. I also enjoyed the time period contrasts, especially when they used the older looking TV clips and the retro live camera shots. The major scenes with the slow motion shots were very well done. They picked perfect timing for those, as they did not feel too forced and fit in well with what was going on in the story.
I am glad they wrote it so that Wolverine was the one that went back because he is my favorite character and he had quite a bit of screen time. Some people I have talked to were confused about how the whole “time travel” thing worked in this film but I thought it was pretty straight forward. I won’t spoil anything but I will say I thought it was explained well and I followed what was going on the whole time. There were a few things I didn’t agree with or I guess I may not understand fully but I won’t spoil anything until I discuss it in a later post. I believe they left it open for many possibilities for more movies to come. They could even go back into the past and retell some things that maybe people have some questions about. It could be almost like a second origins storyline or something similar.
In conclusion, overall the story was solid and easy to comprehend. I would recommend this film to everyone that enjoys the X-Men series, comic book fans in general and action movie fans as well. I think it was very well done and deserves to be a top film of the year so far. [rating: 8/10]
