Any hockey fans out there? I know this is a movie related site, and I’ll get to that soon enough, but now I want to talk about hockey. As an American, and a Californian, I am in the minority when it comes to the sport. I love hockey, something I will proudly admit to anyone who will listen. It is a sport which is beautiful and graceful, yet brutal and barbaric. It’s awesome!
Anyway, since I love hockey and I love movies, it follows that I love hockey movies. Miracle was a fantastic hockey film based on athe true story about one of the biggest sports upsets of all time. But the best hockey movies are comedies. I’ll admit, the two movies in question are Slapshot and Slapshot 2, but those are great hockey comedies and all around hilarious films. Paul Newman at his finest! Unfortunately, Newman does not return in the sequel, and even more unfortunately the film cast Stephen Baldwin in the lead role. But at least they both have the Hansons! And who doesn’t love the Hanson brothers? If you’ve never seen the films, go rent Slapshot and you’ll love the Hanson’s too. GO CHIEFS!!! I’ll get to my point. Brace yourselves puck-heads! We are getting a new hockey comedy. That’s right, in a sign that perhaps the NHL is regaining some of the popularity it lost during the lockout, John Rice is set to direct a new hockey comedy called Stan’s Cup. I know, sounds great, right? Here’s the skinny:
The movie centers on a broken-down, once-great hockey player who gets a chance to finally fill his legendary father’s skates by giving his hometown, known as Hockeytown USA, a pseudo rematch of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” game against a Russian team of ex-Olympians.
I think this has potential. I see it as a rude and crude, slap-stick (pun intended) type comedy. That would certainly fit in with the spirit of the game! It could just be my inner hockey fan talking though. Currently, the film is in the production stages and no release date has been set.
What do you guys think, are you down to see some hockey comedy?
