After watching Monsters Vs Aliens I found all of the mixed reviews very surprising. Personally I found the film extremely entertaining, and extremely funny. The film is obviously being marketed to a younger crowd (12 and under), but I think that even the adult crowd will enjoy this animated flick. In the screening I viewed there was no one under the age of 18 in attendance and every single person laughed from beginning to end.
So what made the film so great? Well, I can tell you that it wasn’t the story. The story was rather typical, and of course predictable. There were parts of the story that were actually down right boring. But what did make this film were the characters!
First, you have the giant girl Susan / Gigantica voiced by Reese Witherspoon. No, Susan wasn’t my favorite character, but without here there would have been no story, and a lot off witty lines left out of the film. Basically, Gigantica was at the receiving end of many jokes and puns.
Then you have B.O.B. voiced by none other than Seth Rogen. I personally love Seth Rogen’s work, but I know that many of our readers do not. It is my opinion that you nay-sayers will not completely hate Rogen’s role in this film. He plays a blob of blue goop that is the result of a tomato being fused with ranch dressing in a snack food experiment gone horribly wrong. B.O.B. has no brain, and personally I think Rogen fit the part perfectly.
Thirdly you have Dr. Cockroach Ph.D., a mad scientist/cockroach that was mutated by a science experiment gone horribly wrong, or right? This is a crafty little character that really steals the show.
And finally you have the missing link voiced by Will Arnett. He is by far my least favorite character in the film. I really think that the creators could have done without him. There is also a giant bug, but it really didnt have much screen time.
Now I know what you are thinking, is he reviewing a movie or the characters. Well to me the characters completely made this film. The way they were animated, and their dialog absolutely blew my mind. Personally I feel it very hard for a cartoon to really have character, and this flick is full of nothing but character. The film contains multiple one liners that I will be repeating around my friends untill they can’t stand it anymore.
I would strongly encourage everyone to give Monsters vs Aliens a chance. Sure, it is a childrens flick, but there are several little bits, names, and situations that are obviously just for a more mature crowd to understand.
