The Weinstein Company (TWC), has scored the worldwide theatrical, homevid, digital and tv rights to the upcoming Cheech and Chong: The Concert Movie. The deal includes Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong, and the duo’s managers, Ben Feigin and Josh Klein.
Cheech and Chong: The Concert Movie will get baked in March 2009, during a San Diego stop on the “Light Up America” tour, which sparked up on Sept 26th. The concert movie, isn’t likely to provide most of its stash from theaters, a change from the days of Up In Smoke and Next Movie. A cable tv spot, and DVD sales are expected to generate most of the cash. Profits from the Cheech & Chong films of the late 70’s and early 80’s have ranged from 20mil to 40mil, far exceeding their production costs.
This marks Cheech & Chongs first tour together in 25 years. During the Aspen Comedy Festival in 2005 the pair reunited on stage, but that appearance involved none of their original material, and was more of a Q & A session. Barry Gordon (TWC Exec Vp of Homevid) said: “The film is a must-see event for the many fans who grew up listening to their recordings and watching their movies.” (No word yet on a release date)
I used to love watching Cheech & Chong films back in the day. We would always wonder if they were really stoned or just faking it. This sounds very cool. Its great that Cheech & Chong finally put aside there personal issues and reunited.
“Dave are you in there, I got the stuff.” :-/
