Magneto “spin-off” still in the works

Magneto

Magneto

I am sure most of us know that we will soon get a chance to see Wolverine hack and slash his way onto the big screen next year.  But another X-Men “spin-off” film was announced at the same time as the Wolverine project was. X-Men Origins: Magneto was to tell the tale of young Eric Magnus Lehnsherr, the man who would grow up to become a super villain and nemesis to the X-Men, Magneto. While we have had plenty of news coming from the Wolverine origin film, it has been silent on the Magneto front. So whats going on with Magneto?  Well, Empire Magazine had a chance to speak to producer Lauren Shuler Donner. She gave this explanation for the lack of Magneto news.

“I think first we wanted to make Wolverine, and then David [Goyer, the attached director] took another film, and there wasn’t a lot of time,” she said. “But I’d like to make that – we’ll have to see.”

Sounds a little vague to me. Are they still planning on making this movie? Well, Donner said that there was a script written for the film, centering on the early years of Eric and Charles Xavier.  But there was no further confirmation given.  But good news, Magneto fans!  Production Weekly has added a synopsis for the Fox film.   The synopsis suggests Xavier meets Lehnsherr while he was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps in which Lehnsherr is interred at the beginning of Bryan Singer’s X-Men. They bond after the war, but their differences quickly makes them enemies.

I don’t know about this.  Sure, it seems like everything is in place for FOX to be able to fast-track a Magneto flick, but I don’t think the producers are sold on the film.  I think they are waiting to see how the Wolverine flick does. Magneto probably won’t get green-lit unless Wolverine does well in the theater.  Shouldn’t they have a little more than just a proposed script by now?  They guys and gals working on Wolverine almost have the movie done already!  Personally, I hope the Magneto movie gets done, and they don’t draw anything from the experience of doing a Wolverine origins film.  I would love to see the early years of Xavier and Eric’s friendship. What I don’t want is for the movie to be bogged down by cameo’s that seem to serve only one purpose: to set up solo films.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m going to go see the Wolverine origins film.  I love Wolverine. If done right, a truly great comic movie,  a la The Dark Knight, could be made. Wolverine’s past is tragic, romantic, and very violent. But the movie seems to have cameo after cameo thrown in. I understand the inclusion of some characters.  Those Marvel characters originally involved in Weapon X like Wolverine was, they belong.  It will be great to see Deadpool on the big screen, he has a history with Wolvie.  But Gambit? The Blob?  What’s the point of that?  I don’t want to see Magneto’s film suffer the same fate.  I don’t want to see Magneto lose screen time to “B class” characters just to appease fans.  Please, if you do Magneto: Origins, do it right!

What do you guys think?  Anyone still care about Magneto?  Will this movie ever be made?

  1. Sounds better then I thought it would be,,, Magneto vs Nazi’s ,,, hmmmm

I’m fairly confident that Wolverine is going to be a huge hit, so maybe this will get made afterall. I wonder who’s going to be cast in the film, better not be Sam Jackson!!!!

  2. LOL
I’m really psyched about this movie. It could be really dramatic. Think about it: A young boy with powers he doesn’t fully understand growing up in a Prison camp where he see’s some of the most horrific acts ever. Magneto is bad, we know that from X-Men. But I think this could shine Magneto in a whole new light. It could really be good. The word that Xavier will play a major role is fantastic news. They could really dive deep into what pushed both men, with honorable intentions, to such polar opposite ends.

I can see it now. Eric is becoming a man, age 17. He is learning just how powerful he really is. He see’s a chance for escape as Xavier and the allied forces attack the camp. He lashes out against his oppressors! Just one young man bending gun barrels and hurling tanks!

  3. I havnt read the Magneto origin but here’s one direction they might take…

Magneto is young when we see him in the beginning so the nazis take him and experiment on him. His powers are weak but the nazis have some exotic technology that enhance his natural ability to control metal… During his development he breaks out and lays waste to the nazi base,,, he later meets Xavier and they pursue the head nazi doctor that got away,,, they team up but when the time comes to confront the nazi, Xavier forces Magneto to let him live to be tried in military court. This is where the rift begins with both of them.

The ending could go a few different ways so I’ll leave it at that for now,,,

Maybe Old Man can continue or improve upon this…

  4. Ok. That’s not exactly how it went in the comics. But one of the very few bright spots in having the character rights held by FOX is that they don’t seem to mind changing the story to make it more exciting. I know I’m in the minority amongst the comic nerd community, but I don’t mind it so much if they change the origin so they could make for an exciting story. Damn them for changing the appearance of the characters, for casting the wrong actors, for butchering the things that make the heroes and villains cool. But they can change the story.

I suspect that you are on the right track with this 790! Sounds good, I’d like to see it. The thing I want the most from this movie though? See Magneto and Xavier fighting side by side against some serious threat. An army, or an angry mutant, something that takes a while to deal with, even for the both of them. Give me 5 minutes of Magneto and Xavier, and I’ll be happy.

  5. Well they could do a lot of stuff with the nazis. They were into a lot of paranormal stuff… :-)

I’m also the same way about the comics vs movie adaptions.
I’m not into comics at all, other then the film characters we all know of… They can change the stories here and there I wouldn’t know…

  6. Sometimes, these comic book movies make me wish I knew nothing of the comics. All my knowledge gained from reading comics well into adulthood only makes it harder for me to enjoy these movies. But I’ll always be one of the first ones to see them.

  7. Yeah that’s the reason I’m avoiding all future Watchmen trailers and or photos. ;-)
    ^
I used to know a guy that owned his own Comic Book store and he would tell me what the films left out or altered.

After hearing about how Venom arrived on Earth I was a bummed with how it went down in Spider-Man 3, but I’m sure not having the Space shuttle crash land in Manhattan sure saved some money. Lol

  8. Venom was ruined in more ways than just that. But I don’t want to get started on how they RUINED that character!

From what I can see so far, Watchmen will be a movie that is both true to the source for fans, and accessable for new audiences. I really can’t wait for that movie. Zack Snyder is my hero!
