A second, longer trailer for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood has been released, with further footage of Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, and Mark Strong. Considering how excited I have been about this new adaptation, I am considerably underwhelmed.
Comparisons have already been made between Robin Hood and Gladiator, justifiably so, however I have another problem with it, the film looks confused. The trailer often flits between grittiness and grandeur, with the battle scenes suggesting epicness but looking like a diet version of grand battle scenes from countless other films. Also, I was expecting a very serious take on the legend, but there are a couple of asides in the trailer which make it strike far-too-similar chords with Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. One thing in it’s favour is that Crowe’s Nottingham accent is actually very good, and doesn’t sound remarkably Californian like some others.
Of course, it’s hard to convey a full film in two and a half minutes, so fingers crossed the final product will be better blended together.
What are your opinions on the trailer?
