Neill Blomkamp is the director of District 9. District 9 was a science fiction film set in South Africa. On Earth an alien ship lands and is broken into by humans that find malnourished aliens on board. The ship is left inoperable and the aliens are kept in a militarized zone that turns into a slum called District 9. This movie brought Blomkamp quite a bit of success and has many big movie houses looking to add his name to their summer blockbusters. Blomkamp, on the other hand, seems to be disinterested in going that route.
The LA Times had a long interview with Neill Blomkamp and it contains a few new ideas he has for a new science fiction film and potential for spin-offs or additions to the District 9 franchise. Blomkamp says;
“I know what I’m doing now… MRC [Media Rights Capital] is another finance group and they’re putting together the cash for my next film based on a treatment I wrote. I had the idea in my head for about a year. I wrote it within a month of finishing “District 9” so July or something I Suppose, or May… But it is science fiction and it has many sociopolitical ideas that interest me.”
But outside of that he seems to have opportunities and ideas for the expansion of the world created in District 9. He has had video games, TV series, and additional films pitched to him and in his interview says “District 9 as a game would be fascinating… there’s nothing happening with it though.” Blomkamp also says he has no interest in a TV series, but that a sequel might be interesting. He has plans for the immediate future so a sequel won’t be anytime soon, but is definitely something he’s interesting in pursuing.
