Ever since American Pie debuted in theater back in 1999, I have repeatedly heard about “Stiffler’s Mom” and what happened “This one time at band camp.” However, the franchise took a serious nose-dive with a series of sequels, and spin-offs. The only redeeming factor to the franchise has become Eugene Levy.
Yesterday THR reported that the series would be getting a reboot of the original series (before the spin-off) to be directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. Hurwitz and Schlossberg were the masterminds behind Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, and Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.
I personally feel that the duo are perfect for the franchise, if this were still 1999. If Hurwitz and Schlossberg would have gotten a hold of American Pie before the sequels, or at least before the spin-offs, then there would have been a chance.
With so many strait to DVD releases, and so many of them being failures, I just don’t see a future for the franchise. The only chance they possibly have (in my opinion) is going back to the ORIGINAL cast, and coming up with a truly unique plot for American Pie 4. If anyone can do it, Jon and Hayden can, but this one is going to be a challenge to make it work.
What do you think? Is it possible to turn the franchise around? Or are they just beating a dead horse?
