Spawn fans rejoice! McFarlane has offers on the table for new Spawn films!
Spawn as most Spawn fans know him

Spawn as most Spawn fans know him

Uber-successful creative genius Todd McFarlane has some really great news for all you Spawn fans out there.  IESB caught up with McFarlane at the premiere of X-Men Origins:  Wolverinein Tempe Arizona, and he spilled the beans about 5 very serious offers to bring his baby to the big screen.  That’s right, 5 offers!  They range from big time, big budget F/X extravaganzas to low budget, small scale film projects.  McFarlane would surely make more money if he accepted one of the big budget offers, but he’s shown in the past that he’s not in this business for money.  Obviously, he want’s what’s best for his character.  That’s why right now, he is leaning toward the smaller scale film project, which he would write and direct.  His idea for the movie is simple:  Make a movie that his teenage daughters would actually go see with a date.  Think The Departed with a creepy thing lurking in the shadows.  Here’s an except of what he had to say, the rest of which could be found over at the IESB:

“It’s not a ‘comic book movie,’ it’s just a scary movie, a creepy movie. Everything’s real except for one element, which happens to be the character we know as Spawn. So it’s notgoing to be supervillain vs superhero or any of that stuff, it’s just going to be a ‘tight’ movie.”

Spawn as he is likely to appear in McFarlane's proposed Spawn film

Now, I’m a massive comic book fan, as I’m sure you all know by now.  I’ve read well over 150 Spawn comics, so I know a bit about the character.  I’ve also heard just about every idea that’s been tossed out there for a new Spawn flick.  McFarlane’s idea now is very similar to the rumored project from a couple years ago that was essentially a Sam and Twitch film, with Spawn serving as a secondary, in the shadows type character.  I really don’t want that to be the fate of the next Spawn film.  I loved Sam and Twitch, and I would watch a spin-off film featuring those characters, should one ever get made.  But I just don’t want to see a character with a major fan following like Spawn be relegated to the shadows in his own freaking movie!  I don’t necessarily want to see a big budget extravaganza, but I do want to see Spawn throw down with some really bad dudes.  I’m even okay with the next film passing on Clown/Violator, and going with a lesser known villain.  The important thing here to consider is Todd McFarlane’s involvement in the project.  If the big budget film happened, McFarlane would only be a producer.  He would not have complete control over his character.  I’m sure Spawn fans remember what happened with the last film, when McFarlane didn’t exactly get to see what he wanted to see.  The most important thing here is McFarlane’s involvement in the project.  He should have complete control over the character, and quite frankly, even though he doesn’t have directorial experience, he is the only man for the job.  So I’ll settle for a small budget Spawn, as long as the genius behind the character gets to do it his way.  Whatever happens, you can bet this isn’t the last you’ll hear about this project.

I think that a low budget Indie-esque film would be an awesome way to reinvigorate the Spawn franchise. They sort of tried the big budget extavagnaza thing with the first film and look how well that turned out. I don’t think Spawn really requires anything flashy or gimmicky to sell it.

I am not sure how it would work with a “real” element to it. If you do it in a way similiar to that of The Crow, it may work favorably.

I think that by real, he means that there won’t be some crazy super villain or global threat or anything that typical “heroes” deal with on film. Probably it will be some sort of real crime spree, I’d bet on someone murdering the homeless in the area, and they start killing the homeless living in Spawn Alley, and all of a sudden Spawn starts killing the bad guys, and I’ll bet anything Sam and Twitch are in it trying to figure out what the hell is going on. It should be dark and gritty, and I’d love to see some sort of neo-noir vibe going on in it. Something with a serious edge, I love that Departed comparison. This could be really cool.

I just really wanted to see Spawn done right, in terms of on screen appearance. Just once, show Spawn in all his bad-ass glory, with chains and cape whipping everywhere, green hell powers pulsing around his fists, eyes glowing. I just want to see that stuff done right, that’s all. Maybe McFarlane will do that, I’d like to think he’d showcase his character at least once. If for no other reason than to showcase his character to sell comics.

    The first Spawn movie SUCKED!

The cartoon that aired on HBO (or was it Showtime) is a thousand times better. They need to make the movie or movies like that, rated R with no punches pulled.

The only thing about the animated Spawn series was that I’m not a fan of the type of animation they used. I think of that animation almost like it’s some kind of trickery. You see a scene and at first you say, wow that’s very cool and stylized…then you realized that you’ve been duped and it’s really poor animation with a “dark” thick lined, style to it. It’s that same chumpy animation that they used in the music videos and the new Watchman companion DVD. I just don’t like it. I see all the great animators out there (look and 90% of video game cut screens) and I don’t understand why we can’t get some really good animated films. I’m not talking Japanimation either. The Spawn animation was a bastardized version of a lot of the Japanimation that has made it to the states. Give me some cool, fluid, stylized animation with a good story. It’s possible…I’ve seen it.

For a while after the first Spawn film came out, I had actually convinced myself that it was good because I wanted it to be good so badly that I just couldn’t accept it’s immense suckitude.

I 100% agree with you Filmbook, the movie should be rated R. It actually might happen, if McFarlane is in complete control. I just don’t see the character’s creator screwing him up on the big screen. It’s his baby, he’ll do well with it.

I wasn’t a big fan of the animation from the Spawn series, but I really easily over looked it because the show was so damn good. I was really impressed and my special edition DVD set of the series is still one of the treasures in my DVD collection.

I have to admit; I'd be curious to see a non-superhero-type movie from Todd.
