Some of you may remember a little while back I wrote a piece about the impending release of two very different takes on the world’s greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes. If you missed it, you can check it out here. While we have heard next to nothing from the Will Ferrell/Sascha Baron Coen comedy Holmes film since that date, a small but steady trickle of information has been released regarding the other, more serious take on the character. There have been numerous interviews with star Robert Downey Jr in which he speaks about his latest franchise, and we even got an unofficial photo of Downey Jr in his Holmes garb. But all that considered, we haven’t seen much of anything with substance.
Well finally we have a little something. We’ve got a new official picture for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes showcasing the films stars. Robert Downey Jr continues his massive career turnaround by starring in the titular role of the worlds greatest detective, next to Jude Law, who plays Holmes’ close friend/confidant/partner Dr. Watson. It also features Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler. The picture is at the bottom of this post. A nice pick, but I’m beginning to have my doubts. For those of you who don’t know much about this project, let me give you the “official word” on this film:
In a dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous characters, Sherlock Holmes sends Holmes (Downey Jr.) and his stalwart partner Watson (Law) on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.
It is pretty clear that this film will attempt to change the way people think about the character. Downey Jr has maintained his Iron Man buffness for this film, something you probably would never see in the previous takes on Holmes. Remember, the big “catch” with Guy Ritchie’s take on the character is that it will showcase Holmes’ skill as a fighter. Ritchie has previously stated that this film will be a “big budget action flick.” Okay… So my question is, what do you think? Do you buy Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes? What about Jude Law? Does anyone care about this film?
Sherlock Holmes is presently slated for release on November 13th of this year.

I am a huge fan of RDJ. I think he is one of the most talented actors in Hollywood, and were it not for his addictions, he’d have multiple Oscars and he’d be a legend in Hollywood. I’ll see ANYTHING he stars in.
But…
I don’t like Guy Ritchie’s films, and I don’t like this new take on the character. Holmes movies should be crime dramas, detective type who dunnit films. I don’t want to see Holmes kick someones ass. I want to see Holmes using sheer wit and intelligence to think his way out of any and all situations. Sorry. But I’ll be all over this for RDJ. Top 3 actors in the world in my book!
Jude Law sucks. What’s he been in that’s any good?

Well Jude Law’s best work (IMO) was “Artificial Intelligence”. He was also good in “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow”, Gattaca, and “Enemy at the Gates”…
Jude Stared in a Sherlock Holmes tv show back in the 90’s and I’m pretty sure he’s a fan ,,,
Guy Ritchie, is Englands Quentin Tarantino. He’s got some talent ,,, :)

I guess I should watch some more of Ritchies films. The only one I saw that I liked was Snatch.
I was wrong about Law though, I had forgotten about Gattaca and Sky Captain. Sorry Jude!
Interesting little tidbit here, now that you mentioned Jude being a fan of Holmes:
Jude originally tried out for the part of Sherlock Holmes, but Ritchie didn’t want him for the part. He saw Jude’s excitement about the project and offered him Watson. I’d think that would be a bit of a slap in the face, a big time actor dying to play a role, trying out for it and instead being offered the role of sidekick… Well, maybe not slap in the face, but I feel like a lot of actors would feel disrespected and walk away. But he was so interested in the project that he jumped at the chance to play Watson

Do not forget Lemony Snickets,he was pretty enjoyable as teh narrator.
Gattaca is one of my all time fav Sci Fi’s
My personal opinion on Sherlock Holmes, I would rather see it done as a TV show, followed by a big budget movie. It seems like there is too much to tell story wise for Holmes to belimted to film.
Though I will support RDJ in the flick though.

Wow Metallicat, what are you doing on the boards this late? We usually don’t see much of you in the evenings…
Holmes would make a good t.v show, if it were picked up by a cable network. I wouldn’t want to see it on NBC, ABC, CBS, or FOX

Yeh, the wife went to bed early and i had to wait a bt to feed my son and there was nothing good on TV until 10
I think Holmes would be great on a chanel like HBO or Showcase, where it can be dark and gritty, like i have always envisioned it to be.

That sounds pretty good to me. Although I think you mean Showtime, not showcase.
Showtime would be the ideal spot for a project like this. Showtime’s original programing is fantastic. Each show is worthy of watching. Dexter is a showtime show. Weeds, Californication, The Soprano’s. Even the programing for women is good. From time to time, I sit with my wife and watch a couple of her fav. showtime shows. The L word (a lesbian comedy/drama) Secret diaries of a call girl, and the United States of Tara. Actually, United States of Tara isn’t even a chick show, it’s pretty good. It’s a comedy about a family with a mother who had a mental breakdown and as a result she periodically shifts to different personalities. One is an example of a classic 1950’s house wife, one is a teenage slut (she is actually btwn 35-40, I’m not sure) the other is a white trash MAN. That’s right, one of HER personalities is a man. It’s kinda funny, written by Diablo Cody, the chick who did Juno, so like Juno, this is kinda quirky.

Your are correct, I meant Showtime, though Showcase would be Canadas Showtime equivalent.
