Thundercats HO!

Thundercats HO!

By now I’m sure many of you have already seen this.  But just in case you haven’t, I’m putting it up here.  Because this is something everyone should see and enjoy.  The Thundercats was an awesome cartoon from the 80’s.  If you don’t know anything about it, here is a brief synopsis courtesy of IMDB:

The inhabitants of the planet Thundera evacuate just before it is destroyed. They were pursued by a band of mutants. All but one of their escape ships was destroyed. Only a small group of Thunderans (Thundercats) remained. With only half engine power, the group, which was led by Jaga, had to set a course for the nearest planet. Jaga commanded their ship while the other 7 were in their stasis tubes. Jaga died on their journey to Third Earth and their ship crashed there. Soon they made friends with various groups in the area and they designed a fortress. Mumm-Ra the centuries-old embodiment of evil, along with the mutants that destroyed the rest of the Thunderans are a constant threat. But Lion-O, the new leader of the Thundercats, with his weapon the “Sword of Omens” will help the Thundercats to have a standing chance.

Perhaps now you understand it’s awesome-ness?  Yes, this show ruled my childhood.  Even now, as a proud father, I enjoy reruns of the show with my children.  When I heard that a Thundercats movie was in the works, I was very excited.  Things have slowed to a near stand still on that front.  But the talented folks over at WormyTV  decided to take matters into their own hands.  Hopefully this awesome fan made trailer will help get the ball rolling.  Maybe someone will finally wake up and realize that this can be a great franchise.  Until then, this awesome trailer featuring  clips from Aliens, The Chronicles of Riddick, Galaxy Quest, Underworld, Planet of the Apes and Stargate.  Have a look and see if you identify other movies/television shows and spot the actors featured in this great clip.  Thundercats, HO!

This is pretty amazing. Sure I’m looking at internet quality, but the amount of time and work that went into this trailer just hurts my head. I’m a editor and I can’t imagine how much roto-scoping and compositing when into this. These guys did a fantastic job.

Though as cool as this is…we know that none of us would be happy once this film actually came out. Just look what they are doing to GI Joe. I was “Gung-ho” about it when I saw the picts of Snake Eyes. Then I saw that they were just giving every other character Snake Eyes’ outfit. Wow…great thinking! Let’s have all the characters look exactly the same! That’s exactly how I remember it from my childhood days. But that is a whole other rant…

Well, they are wearing uniforms, I think to make it look more like official military. But I get the point.

I’m psyched about the movie, I loved G.I Joe as a kid. Nothing I’ve seen so far will keep me from seeing it. I will be clear that I don’t expect greatness. My opinion may change when we get to see the pics of Destro/Cobra Commander. There are some pics of the MARS soldiers over at Superhero Hype. They are low quality mini pics on press badges or something like that. Did you hear about the trailer? I wrote up a full piece about G.I. Joe here, if you are interested…

    But back to thundercats…

I would be excited to see it. You never know what a movie will end up like until it’s released. I try to reserve judgement as much as I can, but it is human nature to judge. I do the same thing, I did with G.I. Joe. You just never know.

I was a avid fan of the Thundercats for their 3 yrs run. It’s a tale of survival facing great adversity, and that nobility is not a birthright. It must be earned everyday, and exists in all of us, even those of non-noble bloodlines.
