Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park

For the last couple of years, there has been plenty of buzz surrounding a proposed fourth installment of the Jurassic Park franchise.  There have been numerous scripts written (some of them found their way to the web) directors being attached to the project, and rumors of franchise veterans returning for the next installment.  And who can blame people for spreading these rumors like wildfire?  The Jurassic Park films all made their fare share of money.  And they were all fun movies.  Sure, they are not academy award winning pictures, but there was just something about them.  They represented a child’s fantasy come to life:  Dinosaurs walking the Earth again.  They were exciting and hard to resist.  It was just plain cool to see giant dinosaurs rampaging on these secret islands, and especially cool seeing the T-Rex killing in San Diego!  So surely there would be an audience for  the next installment, should it be made.

There are plenty of places the next film could go.  As I watched all 3 of the Jurassic Park films, I found little parts that could set up a good sequel.  How about this:  In the first film, one of the park employees (played by Wayne Knight) steals some dinosaur embryo’s to sell.  If you’ll remember, on the night when things went haywire, Knight’s character was making his escape.  But the car got stuck in the mud, and when he went out to take care of it, he was killed by a spitter.  The scene ended with the special canister of embryo’s rolling on the ground and being covered in mud.  When I first saw that, I said “Oh that’s going to be the sequel idea.”  Think about it, the buyer was rich and really wanted the Dino DNA.  So maybe he sends a team out to the island to recover the canister or get new embryo’s.  Chaos ensues.  Or how about the end of the third film?  The Pterodactyl flying next to the helicopter over the ocean.  What if some Dino’s managed to escape the island?  Maybe a pterodactyl picks up a baby carnivore or a Dino egg to bring to its new nest (on the coast on the mainland, maybe South America?  Florida?)  The Dino grows up terrorizing people but no one could kill it, it becomes an urban legend and some team goes down to investigate it.  Remember that the Dino’s found a way to reproduce.  “Nature always finds a way”  was the line, I believe.  So they could work that in, maybe two dino eggs made it to mainland.  I guess what I’m saying is that there are all sorts of places they could go with this.  Sure, it could end up being B movie quality.  But it could also be good with the right pieces in place.  That is what I am hoping for.

Well, there was enough information out there to lead us to believe that JP4 was going to happen.  Steven Spielberg was involved at one point in time.  There were rumors (that were later proven FALSE) that Joe Johnston was going to come back and direct the next installment.  And Laura Dern, who played Dr Ellie Sattler in the original and third installment, confirmed that she was contacted by Spielberg.  She said that she was told Eliie Sattler would play a major role in the next film, and that she would be in to play the character again.  So fans had good reason to be excited.  Until the rumored script ideas began leaking onto the web.  I won’t dignify these rumors with too much exposure here on Movie Guys, but I will say this:  One idea revolved around a group of genetically modified soldiers cross breeding with dinosaurs, another had the military attempting to control the dinosaurs to use them for military purposes.  I shudder to think of that.  I hope it really was nothing but rumor.  All that said, I still wanted to see a fourth Jurassic Park.  I loved seeing the dinosaurs roaming the screen.  I’ve always loved dinosaurs, whenever the Discovery channel or TLC airs a program with animated re-enactments of Dino life, I watch.  So Jurassic Park was a dream come to life for me.  I’d see another JP film no matter how bad I heard it was.  Because Dinosaurs are just plain bad ass!

T-Rex. Isn't he bad ass?

T-Rex. Isn't he bad ass?

Well, it appears I won’t be getting to see another one.  At least, not for a while.  Steven Spielberg’s long time producing partner Kathleen Kennedy spoke briefly at the press junket for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button  about the long rumored film.  And she basically shot down any chance of seeing this movie any time soon.

“No… I don’t know. You know, when Crichton passed away, I sorta felt maybe that’s it. Maybe that’s a sign that we don’t mess with it.”

I will say that out of respect to Michael Crichton, any attempts to make another film should be put on hold.  But don’t scrap the project all together.  In fact, I can’t think of a better way for Hollywood to honor Michael Crichton’s memory than to make a GOOD Jurassic Park film.  Obviously, Jurassic Park had a special place in Crichton’s heart.  It was the first novel that he wrote an outright sequel to (which was used for the next JP film, Jurassic Park:  Lost World )  But I guess, since it is so hard for someone to make a GOOD sequel to a classic film, maybe they should just scrap the project.

But maybe there is hope.  In the Jurassic Park movies, dinosaurs were brought back to life long after the species was thought dead.  Maybe the franchise can be brought back, long after we think it is dead…

    Interesting story idea Jon,,,hmmm not bad… ;-)
That last scene in JP3, when the military watched as two of those tridacdel beasts (dragons) flew away really ruined the ending for me.

(In My Treatment) this is what happens…
<As the survivors are rescued and flown away to safety all is well,,,,the helicopter pilot seems to be receiving new orders,,,

Out the window we see two of the “dinosaur dragons” fly into the sunset…
Just as calm comes over the survivors the helicopter banks hard to the right as the chopper pilot tells everyone to hold on we have orders to shoot them down!!!!

The chopper gunman prep there attack vector as we see the look of horror on the faces of the survivors,,,,,, the end?
    ^
I hated that sugarcoated happy ending in 3.

The second one I will not speak of,,,

The first film I believe did win an Oscar or two. One for sure went to Stan Winston for creating the dinos.

I like your idea! I just really want to see another big dinosaur movie. It would be nice if the movie was a little darker, but the other two movies ended in a similar fashion, so I can’t complain too much.

You didn’t like the second one? I thought it was good, better than 3, at least for me it was. Better plot, and we got to see a T-Rex in San Diego! That was so cool!!!

The first one was the best. Winston had won so many awards, its hard to keep track. He will truly be missed.

    Rest in Peace, good sir

I really enjoyed the First one, it was one of my first theatre expierences. I thought the Second was ok, but I read the novel the film was suposed to be based on, translated on film, it was no where even close to the source material. The third one was too short and needed more substance.

I am on the fence for a fourth installment, aprt me really wants to see dinosuars wreaking havok and destrying everything in sight.

But the other part me believes that unless Spielberg is attached in either the Directors chair or Executive Producer and over seeing the production, it will suck, as the quality has been sacrificed in favor of Qauntity (Action, with little to no plot).

I’m all for brainless, plotless action and brutality. Sometimes that can be fun. I just want to see some more giant dinosaurs eating guys hiding in a public restroom.

i want something that will wow me like the first one did and bits of the second, the third, i found to be good action and dinosaur wise, but it felt like there was something missing and i never felt involved in the film. So wahat i would like to see if they do make a fourth one, is something with a little bit more substance and more involvment.

Don’t fear…we’ve got Land of the Lost!

Seriously, I too would enjoy another jaunt around JP. I just don’t know where they would go with it. Yes the “mindless” din0-action does come to mind, but we could probably get that on any given day if was watched Sci-Fi Channel.

Anyway, they would have to bring the dinos back to the city. That would be the only real ‘exciting’ story they could tell if you ask me.

Maybe the government can breed hyper-intelligent dinos that suit up and go on a rampage and threaten the very country they were designed to protect. Oh wait…that may actually be on Sci-fi…

You might be surprised to hear this JD, but you are actually pretty close on your idea about dino’s designed to protect the country. I shit you not on this one… About 4-5 years ago, there was talk about a completed script for JP4 in which the government contacted InGen about breeding specific dinosaurs and “outfitting” them with high tech weaponry to use for military purposes. I’m dead serious. Apparently, the experiment didn’t work and the dino’s started attacking citizens (shocker I know) Thankfully, someone somewhere had the common sense to say that the script was the gayest idea ever, and they canned the project entirely.

Just think people, we were that close to seeing a sci-fi channel film get a theatrical release!

That’s hilarous. Outfitting dino’s with weapons. Its not enough that the T Rex alone can kill hundreds with its claws, tail and mouth/breath.
Man that’s absolutly the lowest creative idea I’ve heard of since Clone Wars…

Hey JD, lol that T-Rex that’s in the (LOTL) poster looks just like the one from JP.

I know, isn’t that ridiculous? That was the most ridiculous script I have ever read in my entire life. I wouldn’t even read the whole thing, and normally my morbid curiosity would compel me to do so…

I would love to see another JP movie. I think the first JP was the best, and then the 3rd with the dinosauers made to be more realistic looking according to more current paleontolgy views/discoveries. I liked the 2nd one up until the San Diego part and would like to see them stay on an island with the return of Sam Neil & Laura Dern as the main characters. Maybe they could return to the 1st island to prevent the rich greedy man from locating the missing dino dna that was burried in the mud, or from finding/steeling the dna in the lab. In any event, if they do make a new JP movie, I will watch it and purchase any dvd’s that come out. I loved these movies and have watched them more than once.

I remember going to the theatre with my uncle to see the first one in 1993 I think it was..There wasn’t anything a little boy would have asked for that could touch that sensation of the first film. It’s a shame that the original writer of the books died, but is that a reason to kill off his DREAM and life work?? Let alone a fantastic movie series like Jurassic park! and if they are afraid of ruining it, just do one thing: LISTEN TO THE FANS!! I believe that there are only a few movie series or anything in entertainment for that matter that has the ability to keep going for a loooong time like say 20 years and not get stale, but some times you find one, like the JP series that can also make a good movie like the first one, then a crappy one then a FREAKING AWESOME one and still make money like the last one did….Don’t kill a cash cow and a awesome series at that..
