I am sure by now that everyone has heard the news that TDK (The Dark Knight) is going to be re-released into theaters in the U.S. But I must wonder, why would Warner Brothers do this?
There has been much speculation as to why, be it for money, or for awards, or simply just to set records. I am just at a loss as to why Warner Brothers would seriously consider re-releasing the film. This is just absurd to me that a production company would do such a thing.
Maybe I am way out of line here, but I am kind of disappointed that TDK is going to be back in theaters. In my mind I would rather see Warner Brothers work and release another epic film, instead of trying to get rich off of just one title. TDK has already made enough money guys, it is time to move on.
But, I am sure that TDK will do very well in theaters the second time around. It surely won;t do as well as the first run, but i am sure it will still do well. But here comes my biggest concern. Is Warner Brothers starting a trend? Will we start to see a rush of re-releases by other companies looking to squeeze every penny out of there films? I really hope not. I am personally growing tired of the lack of originality in Hollywood. Lets stop with remakes and re-releases and make some new films.

In my opinion, I think WB is doing this for 5+ reasons.
The buzz this re-release will generate guarantees a Peoples Choice award, Critics Choice award and possibly a SAG award or two…
It will also guarantee a Golden Globe Nom for Heath Ledger…and at that point an Oscar nomination if not 6, for The Dark Knight,,,
I think that’s their main goal,,, to win big come awards season,,,,

Can’t forget about the money either 790. I agree with the awards assessment, but money has to be considered a motivating factor in ALL major Hollywood decisions. A re-release would get those last few people who actually didnt see it in theaters to see it this time. And everybody who loved it and helped make it a smash hit will certainly go back one more time to enjoy a classic on the big screen again. It won’t make crazy money again. And I would be surprised if it made it back to number 1, even with a lack of serious contenders. But it will make respectable amounts of cash. And more people seeing it again will certainly help DVD sales.
Cold hard cash + Increased awards buzz

Winning an Oscar or Golden Globe always translates into money in Sho Biz.
Bale and Nolan would get huge pay raises on future projects.
Btw,,,, proud to say I resisted buying TDK on dvd today.

Yes it does, for writers/directors/actors. But do the studios actually net anything for winning awards, considering the pay increases they will have to dish out?

Oh yeah in the long run the studios profit from the Oscar wins.
It gives them a boost in marketing.

Re-releasing DK is a great idea. The film almost made it to one billion dollars, the re-release will push it over. I never get sad when a great film gets re-released and DK, as we all agree, is a great film.

Oh, and forget the Oscars. Hopefully SAG’s strike authorization vote passes and they’ll strike the Oscars, show the AMPTP where they can stick their rollbacks.
