HollywoodReporter announced today that the long awaited Spiderman musical has finally gotten a stage date.
The Broadway show titled Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark is scheduled to debut in the early months of 2010 (Feb. 18 to be exact).
Now, you may have noticed that this isn’t exactly movie news. However, I really feel that the discussion to follow makes this news worthy enough for MovieGuys. You also may have noticed that I haven’t said much about the actual news. That is simply because I don’t care much about a Spiderman musical. However, what I do care about is the trend that this may set. Hypothetically, let’s say that this musical does extremely well. Personally, I think it will, but what will this do to the rest of the comic / super hero genre? Could we possibly be facing a barage of D.C. and Marvel comics themed musicals?
Here is my official prediction:
I, Stan Lee, predict that the Spiderman musical will release without a hitch, and will be extremely popular. After it’s first month or so being opened and thriving, I predict that we will here an announcement that there will be a TDK musical. It actually wouldn’t surprise me too much if we here news of a TDK musical in the very near future.
I would really like to know though, how does Stanley Martin Lieber feel about this? Or better yet, how do you guys feel about your favorite comicbook characters being transformed into a musical?

This > Cats > any ballet. Did I hear something about Bono doing the music for this show.
Also, shame on me for missing both the Evil Dead and The Fly musicals.

Ok, there are certain things that you just don’t turn into a musical. Spiderman is one of them. I dont get what the deal is with musicals. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve seen a few musicals in my time. And I even enjoyed a couple of them. The most recent I can recall was Sweeney Todd. Spectacular. Evil dead the musical you say? I’m intrigued. I can’t think of any of the others at the moment, but I know they exist. I know every single classic Disney film up to a certain date was a musical, and they were all good for the most part ( if you enjoy a broad spectrum of movie genres). I honesty think some people these days can’t comprehend ANYTHING unless it is put to music! I predict Spiderman the musical to face plant hard. Maybe I’m hoping more than predicting……

Cannibal: The Musical. Created by the geniuses that brought us South Park, Team America, and Orgazmo. I think you’d like it BBB. I actually reviewed it for the site:

When did Evil Dead the musical come out? I’ve never even heard of it. Did it actually make any money. Talk about a nitch audience.
And I have to agree with BBB. What’s the deal with adding music to everything? It just seems like a sad attempt to cash in on money makers. I blame “CHICAGO”. Please, make it stop…

I do think that since Chicago, people have been attempting to cash in on the genre, but I’ve seen some really good musicals (musical comedies, don’t laugh they are damn funny). The recent musicals are a lame money grab, but I swear by Cannibal: The Musical. One of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen that just so happens to have a lot of musical numbers, all of which are laugh out loud funny. It was actually one of Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s first projects.
I do wish that this would stop though, even with my love for Cannibal and for Evil Dead: The Musical. I guess they should be really funny for it to work. You should see the clip I saw of Shrek: The Musical on broadway. Seriously, 5 minutes of burping and farting with an opera singing chick and a fat dude with green face paint. Kinda funny.
