The Day the Earth Stood Still

The Day the Earth Stood Still was a classic.  One of my all time favorite movies, despite my age.  When I heard it was getting the all too frequent Hollywood remake, I was pissed.  And when I heard it was starring Keanu Reeves, I was even more pissed.  And all the clips and trailers so far have shown me nothing to be excited about.  Until now. GORT!!!  GORT looks absolutely awesome in the latest trailer, which is why I’m bringing it to you today.  I might just go see this movie after all.  Check out GORT, tell me what you think.  Are you going to see the movie?

The Day the Earth Stood Still will hit the theaters on December 12th, 2008

    I have to admit that I’m pleased with Gort’s treatment. However form follows function. What is Gort’s purpose?? Is it to protect and assist Klaatu or bring about man’s utter destruction. From the extended trailers it seems obvious that the spheres are just transport machines for a plague of nanite mechanisms designed to break everything of man down to dust including man. Perhaps Gort is suppose to direct the operation, insure its success. But to send an enterprise this large to Earth from even our closest neighboring star system seems like a prohibitive waste, if Klaatu has any role to play. Of course perhaps his superiors had a different role in mind for him to play? He’s backup, in case something unexpected happens. As much of an eyewitness or even historian to the events as assistant.

    The way they went in the story was chosen to “make it new” and contemporary. Movie effects have certainly advanced far enough to free the imagination to tell the story they want the way they want. Will it sell? That will be the final litmus, because like it our not the public will say.

    @ the Old Man
    I have my doubts about this movie, but they sure can add a lot more visual flair to this version than there was in the original. I would love to see GORT used as an instrument of destruction. That would be fun to see, considering his size. Maybe he can help break down the larger “pieces” of our society for the nanites to more easily break down?

    @KEL
    Doesn’t He! I’ll definitely go see this movie now. Finally, a giant robot that doesn’t suffer from Michael Bay-itis.

    It’s just funny to see the destruction scenes made in CGI and remember the time it was made in scake models, like in Independence Day. They felt more real back in that time, but you couldn’t destroy so much like in this movie.

    Gort is great, I’ll see the film, but my expectations are way too low

    How could your expectations possibly be anything but low. Keanu is starring in this movie!

    And the destruction did feel more real back then.

    If they were going to use Keanu they should have made it a sequel instead of a remake. You put some colonizing event by humans in the story and the space faring community gets real on us. Keanu’s emotional response becomes justified. Some have said; “Mr. Reeves plays an alien well” but from the footage shown, I disagree. A superior being would have superior emotional balance. When you read “The Sermon On The Mount” for example, don’t you get that sense? It should be the same here.

Should they make a sequel to District 9?
